How to Care for Hand-Smocked & Embroidered Clothing

Heirloom-quality pieces deserve heirloom-level care. At Smocked Honey, our garments are crafted with love and intention—from hand-smocked yokes to delicate embroidered details. While they are designed to last, caring for them properly ensures your little one’s favorite outfit can be passed down or treasured for years to come.

Here are our favorite tips for preserving your Smocked Honey garments:

1. Wash gently. Use a gentle or hand-wash cycle with cold water and mild detergent. We recommend placing the garment in a mesh laundry bag to protect the smocking and embroidery from pulling or snagging.

2. Skip the dryer. High heat can damage fine stitching and natural fabrics. Lay the garment flat or hang it to air dry. Linen pieces especially benefit from slow drying to preserve texture and softness.

3. Steam, don’t press. Use a steamer or gently iron the fabric while avoiding direct pressure on smocked areas. Steaming lifts wrinkles without flattening the texture of the pleats or embroidery.

4. Store with care. Fold lightly and store garments in a cool, dry place—away from sunlight. For heirloom pieces, consider wrapping in acid-free tissue.

Our designs are meant to be worn, loved, and remembered. With just a little extra care, they’ll look beautiful long after the last picture is taken.
